Have you heard of the game show Takeshi's Castle?

It was a Japanese show that aired in the 90s. 

Contestants would vie for a cash prize by attempting to storm the castle and defeat Takeshi.

It wasn't as simple as that though. 

About 80-140 people would take part in each episode and only one person could win. 

You'd be faced with an array of mud pits, water guns and moving obstacles.

In fact, more than 1000 people were injured during filming. 

From broken ribs to being knocked out cold. 

But it made great TV and when I was a kid I loved it! 

So what has this got to do with career advice? 

Well, storming Takeshi's castle is kind of like searching for a job.

Armed with your CV [Resume], you find a job you'd love to do on a job search website.

So you upload your CV and hit apply.

But just like a contestant on Takeshi's Castle.

You are up against 40+ people fighting for one position. 

And it won't be long until you're knocked out by the dreaded "sorry, you've been unsuccessful" emails. 

You know how that feels, don't you though? 

But I prefer to play a different game. 

It's called the "Game of 5".

If you see a role you're really excited about?

Don't just apply like everyone else. 

Use a minimum of 5 strategies to get in the door...

Play 5 different games with a chance of success!

For example, you could:

1. Apply for the job (like everyone else)
2. Email 10+ current employees 
3. Email the hiring manager at the company following your application [see how to do this here] 
4. Engage with the company on LinkedIn
5. Send them something better than a cover letter [learn about my RVP here] 

When you rely on a single channel, you limit your chances.

When you attack an open role from multiple angles, you increase your chances of finding a way in the door.
