Changing Careers? Here's My Game-Changing LinkedIn Hack
Jun 25, 2023What do you do if you're facing challenges with a specific KPI in your store?
You ask for help, right?
Either you go visit another store that's good at that metric.
Or you speak to an expert that can make recommendations.
And if you're trying to change careers without any luck.
You should follow this similar strategy too.
Yet many people go to the WRONG people for advice.
Normally we might ask friends, family or career advice services.
The problem is, many of those people haven't made the leap you're trying to make.
The advice might come from a good place but it won't be relevant.
Here's how you can find people that have made a similar move you desire.
Here’s how you do that:
- Make a list of 10 companies in your *current* industry (e.g Sainsbury's, Tescos, Walmart)
- Make a list of 10 companies in your *target* industry (e.g NHS, National Trust, Google)
- Run a LinkedIn search for the job title you’re aiming for (e.g., practice manager healthcare).
- Click the “All Filters” button on the right-hand side of the filter bar
- In the “Past Companies” filter, add the 10 companies from your current industry
- In the “Current Companies” filter, add the 10 companies from your target industry
Viola!
Now you have a list of people working in your target job title who successfully made the transition from your current industry to your new industry.
Here's an example using the above approach.
Now all you need to do is connect with them and ask about their transition process.
These people have been down the path.
They can point out mistakes to avoid, show you what strategies worked, and help you learn how to position yourself.
The best part about this approach is that because you share a common background in retail, they are more likely to respond to your message. After all, once you've worked in retail, it becomes a part of you, even after you've moved on.
I always say you should only take advice from people who already have what you want.
This is how you find those people!
In my example above, my search for practice managers brought up 71 individuals who successfully transitioned from retail to healthcare. Just imagine the wealth of knowledge you can gain from connecting with 71 people!
